Google AI Max for Search Campaigns: What Advertisers Need to Know Before Enabling It

AI Max expands the reach and creative flexibility of an existing Search campaign, but automation does not remove the need for reliable conversion tracking, landing-page control and commercial judgment.

Google AI Max for Search campaigns is becoming a significant part of paid search management. It extends the reach of a Search campaign using broader query matching, automated creative adjustments and landing-page selection informed by Google’s systems.

That does not make AI Max a replacement for campaign strategy.

The quality of its decisions still depends on the signals it receives: conversion tracking, account structure, landing pages, exclusions, business economics and the distinction between a valuable lead and an irrelevant action. Enabling more automation before those foundations are reliable can produce more activity without producing better commercial outcomes.

This guide explains what AI Max is, how its main features work, how it differs from Performance Max and what advertisers should examine before testing it.

What is Google AI Max for Search campaigns?

Google AI Max is an optional collection of targeting and creative features applied to a Search campaign. It is not a separate campaign type. Instead, it adds an automation layer to an existing search campaign.

Its two principal capabilities are:

  1. Search term matching, which can expand beyond the campaign’s existing keywords by using broad-match and keywordless technology.
  2. Asset optimization, which can adapt ad text and select a relevant landing page based on the user’s intent.

Google describes AI Max as a way to find additional relevant queries, improve message relevance and give advertisers more reporting and controls around automated expansion. The practical implication is that Google receives more freedom to decide when an ad should appear, which message should be assembled and where the user should land.

That freedom can be useful, but it should be granted deliberately.

Why AI Max matters now

AI Max is no longer simply an experimental feature at the edge of Google Ads. Google has moved it out of beta and is integrating elements of it into the future of Search campaign management.

Starting in September 2026, campaigns using automatically created assets and the campaign-level broad-match setting are scheduled to begin upgrading to corresponding AI Max functionality. Google has also stated that the automatic migration of Dynamic Search Ads is expected to begin in February 2027.

This makes AI Max relevant to two groups of advertisers:

  • businesses actively considering whether to enable it;
  • businesses using legacy search features that may eventually be moved into the AI Max framework.

The useful question is therefore not whether Google Ads will use more AI. It already does. The useful question is how much operational freedom the system should receive in a particular account and under what measurement conditions.

How the main AI Max features work

Search term matching

Search term matching lets Google reach searches beyond the account’s explicit keyword list. It can draw on the campaign’s keywords, ads and landing pages to identify additional queries that appear relevant.

This may help when valuable demand is expressed in language the advertiser did not anticipate. It can also expose a weak understanding of the offer. If the website uses broad or ambiguous language, the system may infer relevance differently from the business.

Before enabling expanded matching, advertisers should be able to answer:

  • Which customer problems should this campaign capture?
  • Which services, locations or customer types must it avoid?
  • Are brand and non-brand demands separated where necessary?
  • Do conversion values distinguish a qualified inquiry from a low-value action?
  • Is there enough budget for the system to learn without starving existing demand?

Google notes that AI Max may be ineffective when a campaign is limited by budget. Expansion is not particularly useful when the account cannot reliably fund the demand it already captures.

Text customization

Text customization allows Google to adapt ad messaging using information from the campaign and website. The objective is to produce a message that more closely reflects the user’s search.

This can improve relevance, but the website becomes part of the creative input. Claims, service descriptions and positioning should therefore be accurate and consistent before they are used as source material.

Regulated businesses and brands with strict approval requirements should review:

  • prohibited or sensitive claims;
  • geographical qualifications;
  • pricing language;
  • guarantees or implied outcomes;
  • tone-of-voice requirements;
  • legal and compliance restrictions.

Automation can assemble language at speed. It cannot decide what the business is authorised to promise.

Final URL expansion

Final URL expansion allows Google to send the user to a page it considers more relevant than the URL originally selected for the ad.

This can be helpful for websites with several well-structured service or product pages. It can be risky when a website contains outdated offers, weak blog pages, irrelevant locations or pages that were never designed to convert paid traffic.

An advertiser should audit eligible URLs before enabling this feature. Exclude pages that cannot fulfill the search intent, and make sure valuable landing pages contain:

  • a clear offer;
  • a relevant primary heading;
  • useful supporting detail;
  • an appropriate conversion action;
  • reliable analytics and conversion tracking;
  • mobile-friendly performance.

Our Google Ads management approach treats the landing page and measurement system as part of campaign delivery, not as separate concerns after the click.

AI Max vs Performance Max

AI Max and Performance Max both use automation, but they operate at different levels.

Area

AI Max for Search

Performance Max

Campaign foundation Existing Search campaign Separate cross-channel campaign type
Primary reach Search inventory Multiple Google channels and inventories
Core inputs Keywords, ads, URLs and Search signals Creative assets, audience signals, feeds and conversion goals
Main purpose Expand and optimize Search targeting and creative delivery Optimize performance across Google’s available channels
Control model Retains Search campaign structure and relevant controls Uses asset groups and broader cross-channel automation
Best evaluation method Search-focused experiment and query-quality review Incrementality, channel interaction and total conversion-value review

AI Max should not be described as “the new Performance Max.” It is better understood as an expanded automation layer for Search.

Performance Max remains relevant when the business wants Google to optimize across several channels. AI Max is relevant when the advertiser wants to retain a Search campaign while extending how it matches queries, assembles messages and selects landing pages.

When AI Max may be a good fit

AI Max may be worth testing when the account has:

  • dependable primary conversion tracking;
  • enough meaningful conversion data to guide bidding;
  • clear service or product positioning;
  • useful landing pages covering distinct user needs;
  • established exclusions and brand protections;
  • budget beyond the minimum needed to capture proven demand;
  • a process for reviewing query quality and lead quality.

It can be especially useful when customer language is varied and difficult to represent through a fixed keyword list. Complex B2B services, large product ranges and changing search behaviour may create legitimate opportunities for expansion.

However, the decision should be based on testable conditions rather than a general belief that more automation must produce more growth.

When advertisers should delay enabling it

AI Max should usually be delayed when the account cannot yet explain what a successful conversion means.

Warning signs include:

  • all form submissions being counted equally;
  • imported CRM outcomes being unavailable;
  • calls being tracked without duration or qualification controls;
  • duplicate Google Ads and GA4 conversions;
  • an account already limited by budget;
  • poor separation between brand and generic demand;
  • irrelevant or outdated landing pages remaining indexable and eligible;
  • no process for assessing the quality of generated inquiries.

In these conditions, AI Max may optimize towards the easiest recorded action rather than the most valuable commercial outcome.

If measurement is uncertain, start with the foundations in our guide to Google Ads conversion tracking with GTM and GA4.

A practical AI Max testing framework

1. Define the business outcome:

Choose the action that represents meaningful value. For lead generation, this may be a sales-qualified enquiry rather than a submitted form. For e-commerce, it may be conversion value, margin-adjusted value or new-customer revenue rather than transaction count alone.

2. Audit tracking before changing targeting:

Check conversion duplication, attribution settings, consent behaviour, enhanced conversions and offline conversion imports where relevant. A bidding system cannot compensate for unreliable inputs.

3. Review the website as an advertising input:

AI Max can use website content and URLs to inform matching and delivery. Review page titles, headings, service descriptions and landing-page eligibility. Remove ambiguity before asking the system to interpret the site at scale.

4. Protect important boundaries:

Document negative keywords, location requirements, brand controls, URL exclusions and prohibited claims. Automation needs a defined operating boundary.

5. Use an AI Max experiment:

Google provides an AI Max experiment designed to compare treatment traffic within an existing campaign. This is preferable to treating a before-and-after change as conclusive evidence, because market conditions, competition and seasonality may change at the same time.

Define the evaluation window and success criteria before launching the experiment.

6. Evaluate quality, not only platform totals:

Review:

  • incremental conversion value;
  • cost per qualified lead or sale;
  • search-term relevance;
  • landing pages selected;
  • lead-to-opportunity progression;
  • brand and non-brand contribution;
  • geographical accuracy;
  • downstream revenue where available.

Google reports that non-retail advertisers enabling AI Max typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS, based on Google internal data from 2025. That is a platform-level benchmark, not a forecast for an individual account. Your own controlled test remains more important.

7. Decide which features deserve continued access:

AI Max is not an all-or-nothing philosophy. Search term matching can be controlled at the ad-group level, and advertisers should evaluate the available controls for text customization and final URL expansion. Retain the features that produce useful incremental value and restrict those that weaken relevance or governance.

What should AI Max reporting include?

A useful report should explain more than whether conversions increased. It should show what changed and whether the additional activity helped the business.

At minimum, report:

  • performance by search-term matching source;
  • search terms and query categories;
  • landing pages selected through URL expansion;
  • asset and message performance where available;
  • qualified conversion rate;
  • conversion value and acquisition cost;
  • exclusions or controls added during the test;
  • comparison against the agreed control.

The aim is not to create the appearance of control over every auction. It is to retain enough transparency to make a commercial decision about continued use.

How AI Max changes the role of a Google Ads specialist

AI Max reduces some manual targeting and creative decisions, but it increases the importance of other work.

A specialist must increasingly define:

  • what the system is allowed to optimize;
  • which signals genuinely represent customer value;
  • how the website communicates service relevance;
  • where automation should stop;
  • how experiments are structured;
  • how platform-reported success is reconciled with CRM and revenue data.

The work shifts from manually controlling every keyword towards designing and supervising the system in which automated decisions occur.

This is particularly important across different markets. Location targeting, language, fulfilment, and customer economics can vary substantially between a UK Google Ads campaign, a UAE Google Ads campaign and a Saudi Arabia Google Ads campaign. A shared platform feature does not make those markets interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions about Google AI Max

Is AI Max a new Google Ads campaign type?

No. AI Max is a suite of targeting and creative features that can be applied to an existing Search campaign.

Does AI Max replace Performance Max?

No. AI Max extends Search campaigns, while Performance Max is designed to optimize across multiple Google channels and inventories.

Does AI Max remove keywords?

No. Existing keywords remain useful inputs. Search term matching can expand beyond them using broad-match and keywordless technology.

Can AI Max choose a different landing page?

Yes, when final URL expansion is enabled. Advertisers should review eligible pages and use URL exclusions where appropriate.

Should a small business enable AI Max?

Business size is not the deciding factor. Tracking quality, budget sufficiency, landing-page readiness and the ability to evaluate lead or sales quality matter more.

How should AI Max be tested?

Use an AI Max experiment where available, establish success criteria beforehand and compare qualified commercial outcomes rather than relying only on total platform conversions.

The practical conclusion

Google AI Max can help Search campaigns respond to a wider range of customer language and automate parts of creative and landing-page selection. Its value depends on the quality of the system surrounding it.

Before enabling AI Max, confirm that the account can distinguish valuable demand from convenient activity. Fix conversion tracking, review eligible landing pages, define exclusions and decide how success will be measured. Then test the feature under controlled conditions.

Automation works best when the commercial objective is precise and the operating boundaries are visible.
